bkttimesync restarts randomly
#1
I've noticed that lately, the program flashes a message that it is restarting. What is going on?

Does not seem to be a problem, but I have noticed multiple icons for the program in the taskbar. They seem to clear themselves.

I installed BktTimeSync on several PCs that are on 24/24 and I do not have this problem.
Some one else has noticed the random restart?

Hi there,

I'm having also problems with the application crashing.
Somedays without problems, somedays multiple times.
I'm using the program "offline", just with a usb-gps-receiver on a virtual com-port as time-source.
This is what Win7 tells:

Code:
BktTimeSync has stopped working

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name:       APPCRASH
Application Name:         BktTimeSync.exe
Application Version:      1.4.0.1
Application Timestamp:    5311ebf4
Fault Module Name:        BktTimeSync.exe
Fault Module Version:     1.4.0.1
Fault Module Timestamp:   5311ebf4
Exception Code:           c0000005
Exception Offset:         0000c65b
OS Version:               6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48
Locale ID:                1033
Additional Information 1: 0a9e
Additional Information 2: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789
Additional Information 3: 0a9e
Additional Information 4: 0a9e372d3b4ad19135b953a78882e789

Besides these crashes the program runs fine.
Any hints?

Cheers,
Jochen

My Win7 system has similar erratic crashes/restarts with Version 1.7.0
System is dual quad Xeon (old Dell T5500). Using VCOM to connect to Serial GPS over LAN.
NTP is Disabled.
Almost always bkttimesync restarts OK.

On the 10 recent cases I checked, the Fault Offset was always 0x0000cf69 (of course the Process id varied):
---Example---
Faulting application name: BktTimeSync.exe, version: 1.7.0.0, time stamp: 0x54df1300
Faulting module name: BktTimeSync.exe, version: 1.7.0.0, time stamp: 0x54df1300
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0000cf69
Faulting process id: 0x1be4
Faulting application start time: 0x01d0d594283b9a02
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\BktTimeSync\BktTimeSync.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\BktTimeSync\BktTimeSync.exe
Report Id: 6e857c7b-41ca-11e5-9ecc-00256497738f
---
In the Event Log: Application there are 3 separate Event Id's:
- EventID 1000
- EventID 9010
- EventID 1001

I've now Enabled the Diagnostic Log.
BTW: After closing the GUI the Log was still locked; I found a bkttimesync.exe still running. I used Task Manager to kill it.
I tested Run/Close again & it terminated properly; when it crash/restarts again, I'll look for multiple bkttimesync.exe's
Q: Is it worth experimenting with Compatibility Mode?
Thanks, Roger.

Hi Roger,
I tested the program and there are no compatibility issues with Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10, however I did not test with VCOM.
I would see the last lines before the crash in BktTimeSync diagnostic log.

Hi!
Sorry for the delay in follow-up (family matters). I now have the Diagnostic Log Enabled.

From a 'Clean Boot' on Win7 [Dual XEON CPU each 4 Cores], using VCOM, BktTimeSync starts normally.
BTW: When BktTimeSynch starts There are 4 entries in the Event Log (App):
First: Event #9010 {see detail below}
Event #9013 {see detail below}
Event #9010 {A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (BktTimeSync)}
Last: Event #9013 {The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application}

After launching BktTimeSync, I do a few Manual Syncs & the delta-time looks fine.
On my system, BktTimeSynch normally runs with 7 Threads (I've seen 6-8).

*** I've not dug into the Restart issue because there seems to be a more critical issue!

** Approx 50% of the time (I tested about 20 times), when I close BktTimeSync from the GUI, the App closes, but the Process "BktTimeSync.exe *32" continues to run 4 Threads using 100% of one CPU core. The BktTimeSync Icon in the System Tray remains; but Right|Left Mouse clicks have no effect. **

Task Manager can kill the process in the usual way.

In the LogDiag.txt (after Killing the Process to get access to the log file); it begins:

Hi Roger,
The events that you have reported indicate a problem with the display driver (source Microsoft http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windo...b=5&auth=1).
Try disabling BktClock.

I'm getting random lockups (need to restart bktt) while using a GPS also.
Net time is fine.
(Win7), I7 laptop.
